Great looking, Hank!
You got a 49cc version, or a 63cc version? 49cc version does ~110 MPG, 40-43MPH tops, 63cc does ~100MPG, 45-48MPH tops. Of course, I understand you won't be able to get correct top speed results at the break in... TaoTao uses the same engine, and largely the same body frames for all their scooters. Just the body panels differ. BTW, just for your knowledge, Corrosion X on the exhaust lasts about 3-6 weeks in a humid environment... You may want to find high heat spray paint or something, to protect the 'chrome' on this bike. Other than that, so far my ATM50 has had 5500km on it, and the only thing that broke was the headlight, and a wiring for the blinkers/horn came loose (ground). It's more than triple paid itself off in gasoline alone compared to my car! |

Thanks ever so much Im thinking 63 as she has good acceleration and power, will know for sure in few days as i going to open up the engine and measure the bore and stroke No chrome on this one mostly flat black and in ct the humidity is not nearly as bad as yours is in Florida Corrosion x lasts for a whole season or 2 on my vehicles Take care and ride safely dear friend Yours Hank |
Very nice Hank, I like it!

Hi
First update and its not a promising one 150 miles and the ignition is sticky doesn't always want to turn to start very easily and she left me stranded last night WILL NOT START it appears to be fuel related Im not impressed with Tao taos quality right now>:>:( Will be calling the local dealer tomorrow and let him deal with it as shes still under warranty Take care and ride safely Yours Hank |
Welcome to the 'Chinese' part of Chinese scooters, where every problem is just a hair of work, costs you usually just a few bucks, but will always happen when you least expect it!
I guess you got spoiled by 'Taiwanese', 'Korean' or 'Japanese' scooters. ;-) |

April is the first high end scoot in quite a while http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7248/6...cb902c32_z.jpg Aprilia SR50 2 by inuyasha50, on Flickr my last 2 where Chinese so im well aware of the problems associated with some of them My Puma http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6105/6...e01d1843_z.jpg Scooter Tag 017 by inuyasha50, on Flickr My Redstreak http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8181/7...7f1ff1c7_z.jpg Project scoot 042 by inuyasha50, on Flickr And over the years ive had plenty of Chinese motorbikes My Puma though Chinese was very high quality no comparison to the tao In over 2000 miles the only thing I replaced on her was a headlight bulb I shall keep the tao but if I ever do get another Chinese scoot it will be a Puma Take care and ride safely dear friend Yours Hank |
My Tao is almost falling apart at 5k km.
I have yet to do the first valve adjustment. The exhaust is rusted, The windshield (non-stock) cracked, The seat broken (unfortunately my dog ate half of it). The lowbeam bulb filament broken, highbeams work fine The blinkers broken (wiring issue) The horn not functional (wiring issue). The belt screeching when accelerating. However the thing is still running fine! Probably illegal in some places, but in S FL no one cares. The front tire is as good as new, with virtually NO wear, and I ALWAYS brake with the front brake (I only add the rear when I need to stop faster). |

Oh, thanks for the suggestion, I knew it wasn't the belt, as the belt was still in a pristine condition!
I'll just ride with a screeching pad then. It screeches less when the engine is warm. |
Hi
Latest update 160 miles She is now starting and the key is not sticking and all this happened by itself overnight with no human interaction Instead we now have a speedo that says im going 20mph when im going 5 30 when im going 10 and 50 when im going 20 it is also fluctuating up and down Idle wont stay set its either too low and stalls or too high and races Yeeha we are really getting the Chinese scoot experience Take care and ride safely Yours Hank |
I noticed when putting 15W40 in it, the idle would go up too much when warm (engine would do almost 2k RPM, while on cold I would barely be able to start it).
Lighter oil (10W40, 10W30, 5W30) gives more constant idle. Some people mention to do a valve adjustment. Mine came from the distributor with tight valves, which seemed to last for 5k miles, and now I hear them tapping; ready for the first Valve Adjustment on mine! I also always check the hoses, and hose clamps. It doesn't take an engineer to put the clamps on the right places. sometimes a wrong clamp placement could be the cause of a vacuum leak, with all kinds of problems of the kind. On my Roketa, the carburetor wasn't mounted well. It was mounted, but not sealing well. On my PDI I accidentally noticed it, and tightened the bolts. I have a pulsing speedo on my Tao 150cc. It only pulses until ~30MPH, but that speedo is on the dot correct. Has to do with it using only one magnet to record and send electrical pulses to the speedo, so if the tire rotates too slow, the speedo meter tries to fall back to zero before the next pulse arrives. Too bad you ain't got the ATM50 speedo, that speedo tells you in KM, about how many MPH you're doing divided by 2. Have you done a PDI yet? Opened her up and taken pics? |

A well tuned-up truck/car/scooter/ lawnmower/snowblower will start in any range of temps. Oil temp/weigh has NOTHING to do with how something starts or idles !!!. PS, It does in diesel engines only, thats because of the cold diesel fuel = lower flash point. :) |
It does on a 50cc. The engine barely has enough juice to turn 15W40 oil over in the crank case when it's cold; so you'd have to up the idle to keep it running.
at cold it might barely keep itself alive, but when the oil heats up, the engine idles at higher RPMs. Lighter oil allows you to lower the RPM when the engine is cold; so that when the engine is hot, idle RPM doesn't shoot through the roof. Not an issue with 100+cc engines, but it is with a 50cc. |

Oil weight doesn't have much of anything to do with idle. It only affects cold starts if you're well below freezing. Other than that the difference in absolute viscosity at room temperature of 10w40 and 15w40 of the same brand is probably less than the difference between 15w40's of two different brands. There is absolutely no way you can tell the difference between 10w40 and 15w40 when starting and idling except if you're starting in below 0 temperatures. And I know prodigit isn't since he's in Miami.
On my 50cc Chinese scooter I put in whatever oil I had on hand, it ranged from 5w20 since my Ford Focus runs on it, to 10w40, Rotella 15w40 when I bought it for my other motorcycles, and even 20w-50 just because my lawnmower runs on that stuff. I personally never cared since even if it did blow up a new engine costs less than an overhaul. And I've never had a starting or idling problem starting in temperatures as low as 40 degrees. |
Tell that to my ATM50!
It knows the difference! Also, on my 127cc engine I can clearly feel the difference between 15W40 and 10W40, at higher revs 15W40 vibrates more. I'm sorry if you think different, but my experience tells me this. |

Now now boys, lets keep it civil.. we can still disagree and have differing opinions but in a respectable manner. ;)
|
Yes,scooterwayne. I might be full of my post, so please, you with your 'million miles' of ride experience certainly know better...
not.. If you're so knowledgeable, why dont you then at least TRY to buy a 50cc scooter and add 15W40 in it, BEFORE you start posting, because it makes you look mightily stupid when you're going on the aggressive like that, and you have never even tried it! If you tried it before, you know what I say makes sense! Been there, done that. Have you? Clearly not! |
Hi
She has finally told me her name Meet "Huli jing" http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7299/1...3bee4134_c.jpg Tao Tao E21 001 by inuyasha50, on Flickr http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huli_jing Take care and ride safely Yours Hank |

I'm with spandi on this deal.
"Ruby" is a good name. "Huli jing" is too china cha$ge dropped, name making. Just look at the frist line in the link you posted on wikipedia. "in Chinese mythology are fox spirits that are akin to European "fairies." Thats going make April very unhappy. Doin't do it Hank!! And so i leave you with a bit of propaganda to help you out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccenFp_3kq8 |

Too late Huli Jing It is and Huli Jing its going to stay I don't name my scoots, one day they decide to tell me and I have to go with what they say If you read more on the name they are tricksters and can be both good and bad at the same time Its a perfect name for my tao which so far has lived up to it I leave you with these words of wisdom that show my feelings for my new scoot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8ekz_CSBVg Take care and ride safely dear friend Yours Hank |
After being spoiled by April a TaoTao will not come close in comparison . I had a TaoTao ATma " secret 63 " and it did perform better than most 50s with only lighter rollers (8g to 5g ) and a larger main jet . Well day two the piston cracked . I have had around 40 moped , dirtbikes to street bikes and never once had a piston failure . 6 Weeks later the piston erupted into many pieces . Being used to Hondas I learned my China scoot ( first China one ) was no where as good . I decided to do research on the China scoots since I only had Honda , Suzuki and some European rides and I joined the old SD . I had some one reply to my unhappy post suggest I get the AirSal 50mm BBK since I did not want another crappy 63 kit . When I took my scoot back to the dealer ( under warranty ) I told him about wanting the Air Sal kit . Well the scooter gods were smiling on me as he just had gotten in two of the kits . Man it was such an improvement on take off and up hill with the same top end that I was also told it may be the same . I could get there faster and let up off of throttle so I could keep the speed without being at WOT .
When I had 50+ miles on it a drunk guy on a 150cc wanted to race me . He said he would show me what a REAL scooter would do when the light turned green . Man I smoked him big time and it took him over a 1/4 of a mile to catch up with me . He was a little guy and I am 200 lbs . He just barely passed by very slowly . When I bought the Echarm I wanted to sell the TaoTao . A friend of friend blew up his scooter and needed a running one ASAP . I let him ride mine and he had the cash in hand before he came to a stop . His scoot was a stock restricted one and he was very happy to get mine . |
Hank need's a name.
And i put on my white's . . . | Sir.

Hi
Hit 1,000 miles today, running very nice No surprises for some time now So far im quite impressed with her Take care and ride safely Yours Hank |
My TaoTao T3 has been hit by a Durango, sold to a girl after I rebuilt it, she wrecked it twice, rebuilt it each time for her and it still runs great! The only remote engine work that as needed on the last repair was a new air box. These things are a Timex.
|
I'm still doing well with my 2010 Tao Tao CY150. I had to replace the voltage regulator and battery at about 600 Kilometers, and one valve adjustment, but I'm still very happy with it at 7,000 kilometers. So far, only minor stuff.
