Is it easy or not...
Is it easy or not to replace a carb? How many hoses do I have to take off? I'm thinking about doing a carb replacement myself, if I know that my issue is a faulty carb then I should buy a carb and put it myself. Plus I wouldn't mind saving the money I was gonna give to the mechanic.
|
Yes it's easy, it only takes about an hour, and that's if you clean up really proper. If you're just popping the carb on, it takes about 15 mins.
But I ask; Are you CERTAIN your carb is bad? They don't fail very often at all, and usually just require a good cleaning. |
Cant hurt to have another Carb. on hand, anyway.
http://www.partsforscooters.com/125-...ategory=133066 I would rid it of the stock hoses and get some good one on there. |
thanks guys, ill admit im semi-mechanical but not fully mechanical but i am a DIY type of guy, missing my scoot already had to walk and take the bus today to work http://images.proboards.com/v5/images/smiley/sad.png
|
Makes it a lot easier if you take pictures before you remove anything. Also, maybe colored bits of tape to mark the hoses, then the pic while they are still connected. Take several pics as you work.
|
all you guys are very knowledgeable
:thanks: |
Its easy. The first time, naturally wont be as easy, but I believe you can do it. And if you have any questions, im sure the dawgs here will help.
|
It should be easy if its any thing like a cars carb. Remember to tighten down all at same time. for example dont tighten one down completely before you thread the others. Hand tighten all screws then go in a diamond pattern to make sure its tighten down correctly. Also be careful not to strip the screws since i'm guessing the block is aluminum
|
You shouldn't have to touch the block to change the carb.

Carb Project Update::: hey fellas, so i found some courage (just like the lion from oz) and started disconnecting my carb (gulp) its 90 percent disconnected BUT how do i disconnect the freaking throttle cable (is that whats it called?)
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...ottlecable.jpg plus i discovered the problem, *broken hose (carb drain hose)* look below http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...brokenhose.jpg and the last piece is a electrical thing, look below, there are 2 screws on the sides, is that where im supposed to disconnect it? i tried unplugging it but it aint moving http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...ctricthing.jpg |
The throttle cable has two screws that seem just a little hard to get to, but they are easy if you take the carb off the intake manfold first. Last thing is the "autochoke" or "fuel enricher" it provides gas during the first couple of minutes when a cold engine is turned on. Did you buy a new carb?
|
|
also, im sure there is more than one way to tackle the carb removal.
|
And the drain hose having a leak could cause the engine to run like you have a faulty carb. depending on the severity of the leak

its so simple but hard to explain lol. i wish i was by my scoot now so i could send pic. If you have loosened the intake manifold clamp, you should have some play to turn the carb a little sideways. Then you can see/feel the 2 screws. or just pull the carb off and the access will be alot easier.

Carb project update:: http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...e69/ididit.jpg
i removed the carb! now thinking about either getting a new or clean out the carb by the way, has anyone heard about this carb brand? i think it says 'HLIC' (stock carb) http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...carbbrand2.jpg |
never mind, its a chinese carb, i looked it up. Wait a second, why would it say "standard in japan" WTF?
|
CARB UPDATE: ok guys i finally bought a carb (yay) but it isnt high performance, i know, bummer. Its actually the same size (24mm, Sheng Wey carb) but its made in taiwan not china so it is an UPGRADE, the reason i did this is cause i didnt want to spend too much money at this time (having job issues) later on in the future i will buy a premium high performance carb, i almost did buy one but i didn't. Anyway i just occurred to me to ask is there anything i have to do to the Carb? or is it just plug and play, just making sure cause im new to all this scooter mechanic world.

Question: when i get my new carb , should i rejet the main jet? as in get a bigger one, say if the stock one is a '105' should i upgrade to a 107? even thou i have not done any exhast or uni filter upgrade yet.
|
The #105 jet is probably fine for now.
The carb SHOULD be set to 2 and 1/2 turns off of seat. So to make sure SEAT the mixture screw (turn all the way CLOCKWISE but DO NOT TIGHTEN!!!) then turn the screw out 2 and 1/2 turns. PLACE BIKE ON CENTER STAND AND THEN START BIKE. Then turn the screw 1/8 turn at a time COUNTERCLOCKWISE until you get HIGHEST RPMS, then turn the screw 1/4 turn CLOCKWISE and LEAVE IT. That should be proper AIR-FUEL RATIO. Then adjust the IDLE SCREW (screw on throttle, text to throttle cable) until the RPMS are as HIGH AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT TURNING THE REAR WHEEL. That's it, you should be good, have fun riding! |

Carb project update: finally got my NEW carb (Sheng Wey, taiwanese made) in the mail today and my new fuel hose (helix brand, blue color). now im just waiting for my main jet, which i upgraded to 108, it comes stock with 105 :yay:
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...arbamphose.jpg |
Just to clarify besides having a leaking carb, which was not the carb, it was a broken drain hose, i decided to buy a new carb anyway cause my scoot has a hard start since i bought it and it was getting worse. so buying a new carb would fix 2 problems (drain hose and hard start issue)...when i got home today from work, i put in the new main jet (108) on my new carb just to get a head start, im off tomorow from work so you know what that means, time to work on the scoot, besides installing my carb and fuel line, i noticed that my fuel line did not have a decline angle so i will be rerouting the fuel line and aligning the fuel filter and fuel pump in a decline for better gas flow
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...ealignment.jpg |
Hi
Your doing a fine job once you install the new carb do a plug chop as its a good way to determine o if your jet size is correct and your air/ fuel mixture is right or its too llean or rich http://www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Plug_chop Take care and ride safely my friend Yours Hank |
that helix fuel hose was hard to get into, just replaced & re-routed the fuel line, it took me 3 hours (don't laugh, ran into some trouble), tomorow will be installing carb (yikes) :ugh:
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...picfueline.jpg http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...ewfuelline.jpg http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...ewfuelline.jpg |
You would think what should be simple to work on should be just that, simple. But no, the god of scooter repair always gets the last laugh.... Hahahahaha!

Bad News:: i knew i shouldnt have tried and be mr. mechanic, so i install the new carb today and the fuel line yesterday then when i try and start my scoot today, ITS NOT STARTING ???? i noticed that the gas has reached the fuel filter but very little and the fuel hose that connects with the carb has no gas in it at all, could this be a vacuum issue, im so frustrated rite now, it has a brand new carb >: i tried starting it about 5 times plus one of the times i tried it the battery seemed slow, so now i have a battery issue?
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/e...69/carbnew.jpg |
now the scooter started (yay) but the idle seems high (4000 rpms) and the wheel is spinning like crazy...
|
Question:: where does the rpms have to be when its idle, my wheel starts spinning at 3000 rpms, the wheel STOPS spinning at 2700 rpms, should i leave it at 2700 or i heard that the normal rpms is at 2000 rpms for a scoot, which one is it?? i made a video

Yeah the mixture screw can be a pain to get at. On my bike, I have to remove the side cover.
Your idle should be set around 1600-1800 rpms. |
