Mini Choppers and Street riding.

5 Attachment(s)
Worcester Mass,i have been riding my mini chopper on the streets for about
10 years now,get pulled over a few times each year.Never got a ticket.
The mini choppers seem to fit the definition of a moped yet most cops do not seem to know this until they read the registration.I get [Moped Sticker]$40.00 every 2 years.Just picked 2 more choppers off creigs list already bought [Moped Stickers]for them. One is a clutched 4 speed[worried about that] though i will ride it anyhoo.
The 1st picture[the black bike][4 speed semi auto] is the one i have been riding for the past 10 years. The 2 other bikes are my new ones.
Orange one is [clutched 4 speed]Blue one [4 speed semi auto.]
All 48/49 cc.Dressing them up a bit this winter.

I'm surprised you're getting away with the moped designation. I have one of these, and while New York hasn't caught up with it, my understanding is that Massachusetts has. I read on the web that Mass DMV is labeling it a motorcycle despite being only 49cc.

According to Massachusetts law, a moped is a "motorized bicycle." In order to be classified as a moped, the vehicle must:

Have a cylinder capacity of no more than 50 cubic centimeters.
Have an automatic transmission.
Be capable of a maximum speed of no more than 30 miles per hour.
Comply with all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards.

The minichops are cool. They look to have the same engine as the Grom and Mada$$.
I looked at quite a few of them, as well as the smaller Kikker Hardknock bobbers before buying my scooter.

Gray Area

Yes there is a gray area,The semi automatic tranny [No Clutch)
seems to be a gray area, but seems to be acceptable.
How fast it is capable of doing is another gray area.
Even the brand name 50cc mopeds can do over 30 MPH.
and most are fully automatic.
As long as i dont get clocked over 30 MPH i should be fine.
All are 48/49 cc.
The one i have been riding for the past 10 or so years(Black one)
is 48cc semi auto 4 speed.Over the years i have got pulled over
several times for obvious reasons if it dont look like a duck
than it cant be a duck. But the Mass. Moped registration states this.
[According to Massachusetts law (M.G.L. Chapter 90 Section 1), a "motorized bicycle" (also known as a
“moped”) is defined as a pedal bicycle which has a helper motor, or a non-pedal bicycle which has a motor,]
So basically i am riding a [non-pedal bicycle which has a motor,]

I can't find the notation but I remember reading a few years ago that the Mass RMV had declared the Roketa MC-114 a motorcycle because of the wheels and manual shift.

They're not the only State according to this person.
But, after hunting about a bit, apparently the laws in Indiana say these are classed as motorcycles due to the shift mechanism...which means learner permit, license, registration, insurance, and waiting a long time until the skills test is scheduled.

I keep waiting for NY to figure it out. I've had mine up to an indicated 55 mph on a level stretch. It's also similar to the Cub 50cc which was considered a motorcycle back in the day.

I can tell you this. After five and a half years this thing has been almost bulletproof. While I've tinkered and repaired my China scoots this bike just sits waiting to go. It's not powerful enough for everything I encounter here in the hills so I don't use it for everything. After 4,000 miles it has done it's share of runs. I have taken it on a pair of 80 mile rides, used it to commute over an 800 foot climb and fetched groceries without a complaint. When I say it has Japanese reliability no one believes me. Check out the comments here though.
