I don't see anything wrong with what you're doing as long as the intake manifold-runner isn't too long.
Same goes for the air filter pickup,Try running it up front or if you're deleting the bucket...

Sounds as if the carb. drain screw or fitting may be leaking a bit.

It looks like the electrode has gotten hot, unless it's my view of the picture.
They've got those things set...

An idle of 1600-1800 sounds a bit high. you may just want to put the machine on it's center stand, if it's not already, and check that the rear tire is not spinning and it shouldn't be.

Double check your vacuum lines to the pump, make sure no kinks or loose connections. Check to make sure intake boot is tight on the jug and carb. is tight against the intake boot.

You proably should physically remove the carb. bowl and spray clean that area. especially the pilot jet(the little one-kinda looks like a missile,when removed).
Since the fuel line was all plugged...
