What I'd probably do.... give it a shot of carb cleaner into the throat of the carb, just to make sure the ignition is OK, it should start and run a bit then die. Once you are sure it's a fuel problem. Make sure there is gas in the tank, bypass the petcock and gas should gravity flow to the carb. Remove the little drain plug that drains the carb bowl and make sure gas is filling the carb bowl. If this is the case the petcock or vacuum lines aren't doing what they are supposed to do or possibly a clogged filter. Vacuum from the engine when cranking is supposed to open the petcock and allow gas to the carb. It's a simple system once you learn it. There are gobs of youtube videos showing you how to do this.
