Buddy Hooligan won't run - low battery

After a few weeks away from home with my Genuine 175cc Hooligan in the garage, (no battery tender), the motor cranked normally and did fire, but wouldn't stay running..
After I charged the battery it started and seemed to run normally.

It's always been my opinion that it takes more juice to crank the engine than to keep it running. I'm posting this as more of a curiosity, since it seems I have solved the issue, but if the low battery won't allow the engine to run, should it have enough power to crank the engine?? Is there some feature of the electronic ignition that won't operate on low voltage, even if the engine fires?
