Change The Oil Or Wait A few Hundred Miles?

We just got a 49cc scooter today it has 2 miles on it. Everything seems fine. I am curious if I should change the oil tomorrow or not? The oil level is full & of course clear. The manual is not very good and only says to use SF10W/40 oil.

This scooter is a BD50QT-2A 49CC - scooter made by Jiangsu Baodiao Locomotive Co. It has a BD1P 139QMB motor ( GY-6 ? )

I am not sure IF I should run it a couple of hundred miles, then change the oil? or go ahead tomorrow after a short ride change it? I was going to use Castrol GTX 10-30W in the engine after I verify that this is the proper oil to use.

Also, the rear gear oil? should that be swapped out? Or should I run it a couple of hundred miles first?

I would use Castrol Hypoid 80/90 gear oil in the transmission after I verify that is the correct one to use.


Nowadays with things manufactured with better technology, So, run it 200 mi and change it?

I would go ahead with the oil change unless you know a PDI was done one it.

You have the transmission oil right. 80/90 is correct. You should use 10W-40 oil though. Air cooled engines run hot and the extra viscosity will help.

I was always told that the manufacturer uses a "break-in" oil in both the motor and reduction/gear box and to change them at 600 miles. Not sure how true that statement is but I've always stuck by it. Also noticed every new scooter I've ever owned the factory "break-in" oil had a strange color tint to it. This was in new Genuine (Buddy 125), Yamaha (Zuma 125), Suzuki (Burgman 200) and my Piaggio (Liberty 150). Also my friends Lance (Cabo 200i).

Today I decided to change my motor oil & gear oil even though I only have 10 miles on my BD50QT-2A 49CC - scooter made by Jiangsu Baodiao.

I don't trust the oil/ gear oil that comes from the factory, so I changed it today, then rode over 20 miles with no issues.

When should I change the oil/ gear oil again? I was thinking of 500 miles? Just curious what your thoughts are?

I used Castrol 10w40 oil for the motor and Castrol 80/90 gear oil.

Also, down the road, what are your thoughts on synthetic oil?

at what mileage I should consider full synthetic?

I was going to change to Castrol POWER1® 4T Motorcycle Oil.

I was told this is a great oil to use when I change over to full synthetic?

At what mileage is it "safe" to change from conventional oil to full synthetic?

Also, which oil do you like best??


It has great reviews and is formulated for 4 stroke 49 cc engines.

You don't have to run motorcycle specific oil, because your engine does not share a clutch assembly with the engine oil. Motorcycle oil uses different additives to prevent clutch slippage. Won't hurt anything if you do, but regular automotive oil is fine. Switch to synthetic around 1000 miles. Give the motor a good break-in with conventional oil first. Oil brands are very subjective. I use whatever Piaggio recommends for my Liberty. The change intervals are 3000 miles. On most China scooters people seem to change the oil earlier, 1000 to 1500 miles. Curious to what others suggest. I always forget about the reduction box oil, so it usually gets change whenever I remember, around 5000 to 10,000 miles. Another important thing is check the valves. Mine is every 6000 miles now. First check was at 600 because it was new. Some people do their valve checks more often. Not hard at all with You Tube videos. Also check the tire pressure weekly. Finally, enjoy your new bike!

Or......you can just stick with a good conventional oil, be conservative with the change interval, and save a few bucks.

I prefer a 15w/40 diesel oil, changed every 750 miles. (Did my scooter when delivered, then at 100, 300, and 600 miles....every 750 since then.) That was 8 years ago....still runs great, needs no make-up oil between changes....at a little over 16,000 miles now, and a long way from being worn out. Last oil change cost me $1.52, (1 gallon of Mobil Delvac after rebate was $8.11....enough for 5.33 oil changes.)
I run this oil in all of my bikes....plus a bunch of other equipment I have.
