It still amazes me that it's legal to ride without a lid in the US, and amazes me even more that people choose not to. Fortunately the Nanny State that is the UK does have its up sides.

It is extremely reckless imho but many still choose not too, i see people all the time out riding while wearing outfits best suited for the beach or pool then for riding a motorbike
I just say a silent prayer that their folly wont ever catch up with them
Dont forget some rugged pants and good boots with ankle support you will be amazed how many neglect these and get injured even in a slow speed fall

I'm also very fortunate as my local scooter garage/mechanic type is very open minded about Chinese scooters: recommended everything you've all said, and is happy to service/work on them. So it should be well looked after, and I guess he'd know what to look for come service time.
