You wouldn't catch me on the back of that ride at all, NEVER, helmet or not
That rider imho is a menace, to himself, to his passenger and all who are around him on the road

They were both wearing flip-flops, no less! If I had feet, I would certainly want to protect them from road-rash at least a little bit!

Wear the tread down on the back, then switch the rear tire to the front; effectively doubling the mileage you get off a set of tires...
