Have you adjusted the valves yet? The fuel pump is vacuum operated and lost compression will inhibit its operation. Also check vacuum and fuel lines. If one is being rubbed through or pinched it can cause trouble.

Vacuum leaks are probably the most common cause. Get a can of starter fluid and squirt all the vacuum hoses and the intake manifold while the engine is running. If the engine starts to take off, have the leak fixed.
