Headlight went out

On the way to work this morning, my headlight just went completely out. No low, no high, no blue high beam indicator on the panel. All other lights, position, turn, tail, brake, etc., still working perfectly. Engine still running fine. The wiring diagram in the book doesn't seem very helpful. I'm gonna take it apart this afternoon. What should I be looking for?

There should be a fuse for the headlights. So I would check:
Fuse for headlights. Yes, they sometimes blow for no reason.
If the fuse is good (still swap it with a new one to be sure) then,
I'd check to see if the bulbs are blown. I highly doubt the bulbs blew though because the overcharging would have to go through the fuse.
If bulbs are good then,
I see if a ground wire came undone. I had something like what happened to you but I dropped my Zuma riding a wheelie and the headset ground wire snapped when the bars twisted.
There is also a voltage regulator that supplies power to the headlights and there is a inline fuse to prevent overcharging, and that's the fuse you need to check.
If the voltage regulator failed it should be a easy/affordable replacement. I used to keep a spare on hand when I had my SYM because parts were hard to come by. Still are last I checked.

Oh, the fuse on a Zuma is next to the battery. It's a dumb glass tube fuse. I hate those fuses. We'd replace them with a blade fuse because it was easier to purchase and easier to change. So check around the battery and under the seat.

It appears that the wiring harness from the magneto to the regulator overheated and melted. Not sure why unless I'm pulling too many watts with my headlight. But I'm my honest opinion, the wires they used to power the thing are at least two gauges too small.

So, I had this problem fixed, but now the light has started shutting off randomly for a moment while riding. I'm going to completely redo the repair I made to the original problem with better supplies in hopes that I just botched a connection.

But in case that's not the ticket, what else should I be prepared to check? And also, would it be advisable to wire the headlight directly through a switch instead of it being automatic when the magneto is running?

OMG, that's horrible! I also wonder what caused that meltdown to happen to your scooter. I know someone who added a bunch of extras to a Lance Cabo scooter and something like that happened to him. All the wires melted at the voltage regular, then everything else electrical shorted out.
