Fast scooters can be a problem

Interesting encounter I had with the police in Indiana. I was pulled over for going 45 mph on my vento. The police gave me a ticket. I was in a 45 mph zone. I ask him whether it was safer to go the speed limit or go 30mph and get ran over. He said that it did not matter because a scooter is only supposed to go 30mph no matter what. I guess its a choice to get ran over by a car or get a ticket. I have been ran over before. He said he understood my point of view but the law is the law.

LOL...that has to be the dumbest thing i have heard, he is totally wrong, he was busting your, you know what. no wonder no one likes cops. if you were driving 45 on a 45mph zone you shouldnt get a ticket, you can fight that ticket

Is your scoot untagged? NC law is unregistered, untagged scoots that are stock 49cc cannot go faster than 30 mph. Each state law is different...

I could see this holding true if you have a 49cc scoot. The only places I have seen 49cc scoots is on college campuses or visiting my family in Chicago.

I have to go to get mine registered since its a 149cc. I will get a Veteran Plate. I am going with those cause I figure people will be less likely to tailgate a Veteran or so I hope.

If the scoot wasn't registered, the Officer probably thought it was only a 49cc scoot, which makes sense for his comment about the 30mph limit...

More than likely cause if you do have a plate officers just type it in the computer and it will comeback to them. Then they continue to play Solitaire when you leave

That seems a little silly to me, but it's not the first time I have ever heard of this happening. Personally, I think officers need to be going after the idiots who think they can text and drive at the same time...not those that are on a scooter going the speed limit! People these days.

In NY state they have different classes based on top speed. If a Cop punches in your plate and it's for a scooter that is supposed to go slower than 30 mph and you're clocked at 45 you're toast.

In Indiana 50cc and below scooters are not required to be plated and registered untill after January 2015. My vento is a large frame 49 cc scooter. Where I live there is a lot of 150 cc scooters running around pretending to be 50 cc scooters. I think the cop thought that I was riding a unplated 150 cc scooter. This equals a larger revenue collection. Once he found out it was a 50 cc scooter he had to recoup his time investment and gave me a "moped ordinance violation" for exceding the 30 mph speed limit for 50 cc scooters.

In my state if it produces more then 2 HP its considered a motorcycle

That's why all my scoots are registered and insured as they easily exceed that cap
I've had my motorcycle endorsement for many years so i have no problems riding any type of 2 wheeled vehicle

Don't they have more important things to do? I think it is silly that he was so focused on giving you a ticket when he should have been focused on other things.

As we all know, in many states in the South 50cc scooters are called DUIcycles since you do not need a license to ride them. It cracks me up to hear from people there who get seriously caught on a modified 50cc doing light speed when their license was pulled in the first place for some heinous offense. You do the crime you should be happy at 30 mph not breaking the law..........again.

In Indiana my 50cc Cub clone is considered a full size motorcycle because it shifts.....and does 55 mph on a level road. How fair is that, lol.

Indiana scooter laws were somewhat muddled for years. This was changed this year to make the laws more clear. 50CC now will be have to be plated and registered as of Jan 15. For those with out a drivers license they will have to take a test and get a moped endorsement on their state ID card. A 150cc was always considered to be a motorcycle and will continue to be and requires the full insurance ,plates ,and drivers license with a motorcycle endorsement. The problem is that many non licensed cheat and ride 150 scoots pretending that they are 50cc. The police are well aware of this. As for me I was clearly in the wrong for operating my 50 cc scooter over the 30mph limit. I figured in a 45 mph zone the police wouldn't mind if I kept up in traffic. I will simply pay the small fine and continue on my way. I am unsure if the Indiana BMV will plate my 50cc scooter as motorcycle. I will find out. In the mean time I will just be more careful and not go over 30 mph when there is police around. I like riding my scooter and much prefer it over driving my car.
