The sports bike makes it's torque in the higher revs. Perhaps it never even gotten above 5k RPM in 1st gear there.
The harley makes it's peak torque at ~3000-4000 RPM. It's more tuned for fast acceleration than the sports bike, but it also consumes more gas along the way. Make it 1/4 mile race, and the sportster will beat the harley fair and square.
