Cant get a spark on a Vespa 50 Special

http://imgur.com/a/gqKUK
I'm resorting a 1980 Vespa 50 Special V5B3T. It has been a dream of mine to have a Vespa and when I saw one come up on eBay disassembled I though HEY! what an awesome way to learn everything about a Vespa but put-on one totally together.

So my quest begins. I've been working on the body while waiting for parts to come in. I ordered a 70cc kit because the old cylinder was cracked and I also wanted a little more pep if at all possible. So I'm putting to gather the engine and everything is going well until no spark.

This is what I've done so far.
  • Checked the coil - I have a volt meter and honestly I'm not 100% sure how to use it but I put a lead connectors on both sides of the connectors and i didn't get a sound saying that the current is not going through it … again not 100% sure what to set it on but I'm nor sure if it even works that way. (I really dont know how to test it correctly)
  • Checked the cable - I cut off the old ends cleaned them up really good and made a new connection
  • Checked the points - pulled the fly wheel off sanded down the point and then put the wheel back on and made sure they were opening and closing.
  • Basic Clean Up - I cleaned off the magnets, or any where that would help magnetized strength.

Please help - Thanks in advance.

My 1980 50 special doesn't have a battery, gets all the charge from the fly wheel. I think it's my coil because when I put my voltmeter on 2000 Ohms and put the leads on both connectors I don't get a reading at all.

I assume I'm doing that correctly. Please let me know if I'm not.

I've reserved to the fact that I just need to start replacing parts... always better to have new in the long run but I have some more questions if you guys don't mind helping more. I have know one else to turn to for advice and online searching is killing me.

1980 Vespa 50 Special.

* Here is my engine's Stator Assembly - http://i.imgur.com/QdHmkwi.jpg
Here is My Coil - http://i.imgur.com/v0yxdrp.jpg - http://i.imgur.com/sHOV2uV.jpg

* Do I want this replacement coil? - http://www.scootermercato.com/Scoote...n-Coils/132299

* Do I want this replacement condenser? - http://www.scootermercato.com/Scoote...ndensors/79697
or do I want this one? - http://www.scootermercato.com/Scoote...ndensors/46750
As you see on mine there is a red wire going to the winding and looks like it's a part of it.

* Also I should assume should buy points also - http://www.scootermercato.com/Scoote...densors/101761

You need the 46750 condenser you have to be able to go to both sides of that assembly. It looks like its missing a wire though in there, is there a wire coming off that crimped red lug on the points assembly? Also the red wire on the condensor looks like it was soldered by a 3rd grader does it go there?? I haven't see this assembly correctly set up let me see if I can find a pic of the correct set up in there.

Looks like the right coil.

Always replace points and condenser together, they are buddies...

I also I don't see how the condenser I said looked right will hook up as the assembly is currently... They may have rewired it to use the other coil at some point due to issues with parts available on hand...Sorry wish I could be more helpful I will see what I can dig up in the mean time...

Thanks a ton scootn, you got me one step closer. I'll look around also for a good diagram of the plate. Putting me on the track of it my not be right also helps me out more than you know.

Another frustrating part to all this is that I can't find any diagrams of my two coil set up.... I want to replace the coils if it comes to that but then again I'm in the boat of what ones to buy.

Thanks again. TJ
