You can build yourself something similar to the Janus, but with far less speed, looks and quality for $500 or less. Good for 20-25 mph.
The Phantom motorbike (pictured below) is kind of half way between the $500 DIY and Janus. It looks great, goes 30 mph, and requires no tag/insurance in most states.
