sounds like a plan but I need to figure out the right combo.cant I go with just a bigger main jet instead of a bigger carb?i keep hearing different advice

Yea it depends on the size of the carb, if it's a 14mm or larger you can just get a bigger main jet. (Around an 84 usually.) If you do decide to upgrade the carb, go with a 17.5mm.

I thought stock had 18.how can I tell what I have

Measure the width of the smallest part of the carb throat where the slide is.
